Weeks 46 Through 50

Week 46

October 6: Jim Talbott warns that while many people think that MAGIC is dead, their application to the FCC for a radio station license is still outstanding, and the November elections could easily change the organization's fortunes, especially if the voters aren't paying attention. Now that the Bailout Bill was voted in, the same people who were trying to convince us that it had to be passed immediately to prevent a crash of our nation's economy are now telling us that it might not work at all, and that it will certainly take time to see if it has any effect. In local news, Gene Conlogue got a new three-year contract, the Millinocket Golf Club repaid its debt to the town of Millinocket, unlike MAGIC or its patrons. JT points out that the Magic City Morning Star reported on the grant obtained by the Millinocket Historical Society, while other media sources are ignoring it. He also points out that Mark Bigge, a Millinocket resident, wrote the grant that resulted in the award, and that he didn't skim money off the top like MAGIC. He deserves a big thanks from the people of Millinocket.

October 7: Jim Talbott reports that OJ Simpson is going to jail, and is not out on bail. After the bailout bill, the Dow dropped like a rock, yet we're not hearing all of the scare tactics that we heard while they were working at passing the bailout bill. Now they simply say that it's going to take time. Why couldn't Congress have taken the time to read the bill that they were passing, and to come up with a better one? JT discusses the $75,000 worth of economic development money that went to the town of Millinocket, and not to MAGIC. Maybe the town will be able to actually do something with the money, especially if the voters select the right people in November. There are several MAGIC candidates on the ballot and a vote for any one of them could set the town back.

October 8: Jim Talbott reports that there's snow on the mountain. He also reports on local events, although things are pretty quiet in Millinocket right now.

October 9: Jim Talbott reminds his listeners that Millinocket has a big election coming up in November to determine who is going to take control of the direction of the town.

Week 47

October 13: On Day 340 of its fight against MAGIC and for the northern woods, things are a little quiet because FCC regulations limit the guests that can be on prior to an election. Jim Talbott discusses Brookfield Power and their talk about a biomass boiler for the Millinocket mill, the key point being that it's nothing but talk, intended to put off any action by the Millinocket town council on protecting the interests of the town by taking the power facilities by eminent domain. Of course, whenever you're getting your news from Nick Sambides of the Bangor Daily News, you've got to read between the lines. East Millinocket also in a property tax dispute with Brookfield over $300,000 in property tax revenues that the power company doesn't want to pay. Instead, the taxpayers of East Millinocket have to engage an attorney and fight for it. The executives of Brookfield know that whatever they can save in taxes, they can received in bonuses and benefits.
